same thing....
there is actually an upside to this......90-95% of the loans the gov't would buy/insure, are not in trouble....they would be making the payments regularly and on time...so the gov't could actually make some $$$ if they don't spend too much (I know) doing the paperwork on them....

I had this in my email this morning from Fortenberry's office.

We must also not allow the executives who created this financial mess to receive outrageous compensation packages at a cost to the taxpayers.

It is clear that we have been witnessing a dramatic unraveling of the financial sector over the past months and even years. Much of this has been driven by a decline in housing prices, which had its genesis in the speculative bubble created by the overaggressive use of financing techniques. This in turn led to an excessive and unsustainable valuation in housing. Although Nebraskans generally did not take advantage of these exotic financial instruments and acted responsibly, the state’s economy will not be immune if the credit and overall economic markets rapidly deteriorate.

I understand the need for the government to have a role in addressing the overall problem. However, many serious questions remain and the Administration’s initial proposal essentially calling for a $700 billion blank check was clearly unworkable.

They are saying that the Republicans voted against it because Pelosi came out before the vote and said all this mess was the republicans fault... Funny how all the Finance committees are chaired by a democrat and that they wouldn't invite any republicans in to play...

Pelosi shit in her partisan cereal and now she has to eat it...

But I don't believe that is why the Republicans voted against it And Why are we talking about the Republicans anyway?

The Democrats hold the majority, they could have voted this in all by themselves....

I did hear a lot of talk in the shop and on the street and couldn't find one person for it... Mainly because they are attaching other spending bills, or "earmarks" to this "emergency" spending bill...

If the Republicans decided to vote against the bill just because Pelosi was trying to blame them for the mess, then they are no better than she is. Most adults can rise above name calling. Personally, I don't know if a bailout would even work. It doesn't seem any of the prior steps taken have made any real results.

Either you vote for what you think your constituents want or need, or you're just part of the corporate political machinery. That goes for both sides.

Yes, the point drop was huge, but the drop in percentage didn't even make it into the top 10. To me, it looks like just another correction like 1987. Trading wasn't halted, was it?

On the other hand, if people were able to short those financial institution shares, maybe the drop would have been bigger.

And, like you said, the points drop, is really, a correction in an inflated market....

And none of this would have happened if predatory lending wasn't used to inflate the bottom line of mortgage companies....sub-prime home loans...gimme a fuckin break....Joe Blow down the street doesn't have better credit that GM...and the Prime Rate is what they get....people who fucked up and got loans they can't pay should do what anybody else does in that situation.....file bankrupcy and start over. And the companies who floated the bastard loans should be made to pay. Maybe then they'll understand home economics a bit better....

Don't start it with that, that's what I'm saying about political discussion.

Whoever you love or hate, the banks got us into this mess, whether the R's or D's voted for the measures or sponsored them doesn't matter. This crunch has been brewing for a year, and the banks didn't do anything about it, and the R's and D's obviously weren't too concerned about it.

I was willing to let the R's and D's figure out what needed to be done, and let them come up with a biparisan plan, but of course, that didn't work. If it wasn't Pelosi, it would have been somebody else, and then the finger pointing starts.

Again, I'm not taking an R or D side. If this is such a serious issue, why can't they just do something and everybody take the credit or blame? Either that isn't possible, or it isn't such a big issue.

, I'm not saying I'm on her side, but the banks did this mess, congress is trying to fix it, and both sides are showing me that neither of them are really rootin' for the people.

Yes, and it isn't like people were ignorant, all the warning signs were there about reverse mortgages, making your payments on time, etc. etc. There was no R or D stepping in to say "This isn't right", because their portfolios kept getting better.
