Re: Five Things Thender Won't Tell You

Fricken big city mechanics...

Couple of problems with the first post... #1, Yes ask to see your old parts, but if you want them you might have to pay a "core" charge for them since the parts store usually wants things like water pumps, starters and alternators back for rebuilding...

#2 The article is a bit misleading about the double labor charge... It should of explained they were talking about certain engines that run the water pump off the timing belt and that if it were the other way around, say you want to replace the timing belt and discover the water pump needs changing too, then it will be extra labor...

I always provide a written estimate... Just makes good sense to have the customer understand up front what is going to be required to do the job and so that there are no questions after the job is done... Also, if I don't know you from Adam, then I'll also provide a work order on the estimated and require your signature in case you think you are gonna skip payment...

Re: Five Things Thender Won't Tell You

And I have to agree with the thirteen thread, too... Honesty will always make more money and keep customers coming back...

The ASE thing is a gimmack though... I'm ASE certified.... Yup just complete them tests in front of a VCR and then send them in... THAT'S what a lot of mechanics won't tell you... What scares me is if I walk in a shop and don't see any professional repair manuals, scan tools or diagnostic aides... I know some shops that don't even own an ohm meter for Christs sakes!!!

Re: Five Things Thender Won't Tell You

But some articles and TV news shows about bad mechanics are fricken set ups too.... I call it "Lying by omission"... Don't tell the whole story and set the shop up to fail on camera... Just for a good story at Ten...

Most people are ignorant when it comes to all Jobber/repair stuff... i.e. heating & cooling, Plumbing, House repair, Appliance repair, small engine repair and the funeral industry...
