CARY, Ill. - Authorities have filed a second disorderly conduct charge against a high school senior arrested for writing an essay officials described as disturbing and inappropriate.
Allen Lee, 18, of Cary was arrested earlier this week after penning the essay at his northern Illinois high school. Lee contends he was just following the creative writing assignment he was given in class at Cary-Grove High School.
Lee initially faced just one charge, but an amended complaint filed Thursday cited a second passage.
According to the complaint, the essay reads, in part, "Blood, sex and booze. Drugs, drugs, drugs are fun. Stab, stab, stab, stab, stab, s...t...a...b...puke. So I had this dream last night where I went into a building, pulled out two P90s and started shooting everyone, then had sex with the dead bodies. Well, not really, but it would be funny if I did."
Another passage said, "as a teacher, don't be surprised on inspiring the first CG shooting," the complaint said.
The creative writing assignment in Lee's English class on Monday instructed students to "write whatever comes to your mind. Do not judge or censor what you are writing," according to a copy of the assignment.
"In creative writing, you're told to exaggerate," Lee said. "It was supposed to be just junk. ... There definitely is violent content, but they're taking it out of context and making it something it isn't."
Lee has been removed from school, and District 155 spokesman Jeff Puma said the district is evaluating Lee's punishment while he attends an offsite learning program in the school district.
"It wasn't just violent or foul language," Puma said. "It went beyond that."
Lee's attorney, Dane Loizzo, said his client was within the parameters of the assignment.
"A stream of consciousness seems to be the goal of the assignment," Loizzo said. He said Lee has never been disciplined in school and signed Marine enlistment papers last week.
His father, Albert Lee, has defended his son as a straight-A student who was just following instructions and contends the school overreacted. However, Albert Lee has said he understands the situation because of what happened last week at Virginia Tech when student Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 students and faculty members before committing suicide.
The charges against Lee could result in a possible $1,500 fine and up to 30 days in jail if he is convicted.
Cary is about 40 miles west of Chicago.

Well be honest here. That is disturbing. What was everyone saying after the VT shootings? Signs, signs....should have saw them. Or we did...just didn't think nothing of it.

I'd be a little disturbed if this boy was in my childs classroom. Plain and simple. People have a right to all the wonderful things our country gives them but this boy knew there were boundaries, whether expressed or not.

If you told a child not to smack his brother and instead, he went and smacked you...would he be corrected?

Okay, okay...so had this VT boy lived and committed those crimes, he shouldn't be punished because he was making a point? Its called the insanity plea and they really need to pull that out of the court room.

This boy, if he needs help, should seek it thru another venue. Not putting fear into others lives so that someone will be clued into his need for help. He has a mouth, call a counselor and make an appointment!

This crap really pisses me off. When something trajic happens, people are so quick to shift blame. I shoulda, coulda, woulda, but DIDN'T...and for that I feel terrible. I could have helped, I should have helped....but I DIDN'T. I could have saved 30 frickin people from losing their lives...blah blah blah.

The point of the matter is, these people do need help but if they aren't willing to seek this help out for themselves, then shame on them! Its like high school girls cutting themselves for attention. Gimme a break.

This boy with his essay, obviously wanted attention and knew whole heartedly that with the recent VT shootings, he'd get it. Now he should pay.

So I ask you, why would someone write an essay for attention when they could just seek counseling and get the help they need?

You can't honestly believe that this boy was doing nothing more than causing a stir to create attention. He should be penalized for that. And I think what they are giving him is fair and just. Its my opinion.

Cuz it's just not that easy to ask for help
as well as those whom really need help don't realize they are the ones with the problem. it's always someone elses fault.

Sure, he may be a punk ass kid. I can relate. CGHS overreacted, though, plain and simple; the VT tragedy has warped school administrative officials across the country, no one will argue that. So the dude wants attention--give him plenty of attention within normal school discipline (ie. a detention, a conference with school counselor and parents...the type of attention he wouldn't want, assuming he wanted any)


But to arrest him? Don't argue for that...only if what he wrote were explicit fighting words. Fighting words are not protected by the first amendment, and should be punished reasonably. Clearly, there is some gray area here, plenty of room for interpretation, but I don't think what he wrote were fighting words. We can agree to disagree here
