Man in wheelchair takes wild ride

At first, dispatchers didn't know whether what they were hearing was a prank.

"You are not going to believe this," a woman said during the 4 p.m. call to Michigan State Police Fifth District Regional Dispatch. "There is a semi truck pushing a guy in a wheelchair on Red Arrow Highway."

As dispatchers took the information and tried to determine whether the call was genuine, more calls began coming into the Van Buren County dispatch center: A 21-year-old Kalamazoo man, whose wheelchair had become lodged in the grille of a semitrailer, was being pushed down the road.

The man, despite being pushed some two miles at speeds estimated at up to 50 mph, was not hurt and was "unfazed" by his wild ride, police said in a news release. State police and Paw Paw police declined to release his name this morning.

The semi hit the wheelchair as the man was trying to cross Red Arrow at Hazen Street in Paw Paw at about 3:30 p.m., Paw Paw police said. The driver, a 52-year-old Kalamazoo man whose name police also would not release, said he'd been waiting at a red light and didn't see the wheelchair, according to a news release. When the light turned green, he proceeded west on Red Arrow.

Police said the man in the wheelchair said he wasn't sure what the crosswalk signal was flashing when he went onto the road. A check of the lights at the intersection showed they were working properly, police said.

Troopers and Van Buren County sheriff's deputies caught up to the semi about two miles down the road, shortly after it had pulled into a Ralph Moyle Inc. trucking facility along Red Arrow Highway. They found the wheelchair still lodged by its handles in the truck's grille.

The truck driver didn't believe what officers were telling him until he stepped down from his cab and saw his "unusual hood ornament," state police said.

"It was quite a ride," state police, in a news release, quoted the man in the wheelchair as saying.

"The man spilled his soda pop, but he wasn't upset," said Sgt. Kathy Morton of the Michigan State Police.

Paw Paw police said a report on the incident would be sent to the county prosecutor's office, but did not indicate it would seek any charges.

A woman who answered the phone at Ralph Moyle Inc., the Mattawan-based trucking firm that owns the semi, said the company had no comment.
