Mayor Makes Stadium Pitch to NCAA

Indianapolis, IN - Mayor Mike Fahey has wrapped up the meeting with the NCAA in Indianapolis. The Mayor and members of his stadium review committee presented plans for a new downtown baseball stadium. The committee recommends building the stadium on Qwest Center parking lots C and E.

Following today's meeting, College World Series Inc. President Jack Diesing said he's confident the NCAA and Omaha taxpayers will support a downtown stadium. NCAA Executive Vice-President Tom Jernstedt said there is still a lot of work to do and the NCAA won't make a final decision until after April 30th. "The individuals we met with indicate they have a lot of work to do and we will meet with them around April 30 and consider all options and hear what they have to say at that point in time," said Jernstedt. Omaha's current contract with the NCAA expires in 2010.

Mayor Fahey will make the plan public Wednesday. "What we've done here is try to make sure our partners for the last fifty years have the best information we had at the time. We think that's the right thing to do, we certainly don't regret it. I think the people of Omaha will understand why this makes sense to move forward," said Fahey, defending the decision to make the presentation to the NCAA before making it available in Omaha.

A series of public meetings to explain the proposal starts next week. A website will also be launched tomorrow to explain the stadium development plan.
