Doesn't President Bush have friends in the oil business? I'm sure he's got some stock in oil companies.

Re: $4.00 per gallon gas?

That last time I checked anybody in America was free to own that stock.

Who is in charge and who owns stock has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that China and India are increasing demand along with the USA and not one country on this planet is doing a damned thing about the fact that the oil is RUNNING OUT!

It's called supply and demand. Demand on on the rise big time and supply is not there to keep up like it used to.

Put all of your political BS aside, wake up and realize that we are in a world of shit if we don't figure out how to live without the black gold that is oil and soon.

I don't remember who said it but my favorite quote is, "When did we start running out of oil? The day we started using it."

This site is pretty extreme but there is a lot of truth to it also:
Peak Oil: Life After the Oil Crash

Maybe life will remain pretty normal for me and you, if we are lucky, but I really do fear the wold that my daughters have to look forward to.

Re: $4.00 per gallon gas?

I am not arguing that anybody can own the stock, in fact I think I have some, and I am not denying we are running out, ask anyone I know and they will tell you I routinely say that we will run out in my lifetime. Supply and demand has a few bullet points in this. However there is still a lot of issues that lie with the oil companies and the government. Look at the earnings of your big oil lcompanies it is billions of dollars in profits per quarter doesn't this seem a bit out of whack. Then we get to the government who subsidizes the oil industry despite these record billion dollar profits, this also seems a bit out of whack. I firmly believe there are alternative energy sources out there but they are never going to see the light of day or be subsidized to make them grow and be effective until we take care of the problems listed above. The Oil companies can spend a lot of money to make sure congress does not send money to these other sources because they are making so much money.

Re: $4.00 per gallon gas?

I don't disagree with your points, they are very valid.

You just made it sound like it was the Presidents fault that the gas price may hit $4 this year which is not true. Stock or no stock, subsidies or no subsidies, gas is going to continue to get more and more expensive as we run out.

I still find it hard to believe we have yet to harness that big fusion reactor in our sky that puts out enough energy in one second to power this planet for a thousand years or more.

Those subsidies need to be taken away from oil companies and given to bright young minds to work on solar and hydrogen power.

Re: $4.00 per gallon gas?

weak dollar = high oil prices

strong dollar = oil prices tank (pardon the pun)

Oil is bought and sold in US dollars worldwide because of its strength and consistancy in world markets. Well uncle sam ain't so faithful anymore.

If every country switch to Euros to buy oil futures then you'll pay about a buck a gallon again. Chavez stopped taking US dollars as curreny for exported oil from Venezuela....prices began to spike and have remained high.

Why do you think we suck up to the Saudis like we do. Its not so they will sell us oil its so they will keep taking US dollars.

Its all about the money kids.......every American should be petrified that the Euro is gaining strength on world markets. Once the primary purchasing power shifts from US dollars to the Euro you can kiss our economy goodbye. Market crash and depression.

at least gas will be cheap again....too bad you won't have job to pay for it.

Re: $4.00 per gallon gas?

I agree with you Ox, that is a very big factor considering the dollar fell to the Euro on Friday... I believe it was 1 dollar = 1.53 Euro...

But I also believe what is hurting us is that investors are putting their money into commodities instead of securities because the fed keeps lowering the interest rate and they aren't making any money...

They did it back in the 80's and we hit a recession quicker than shit...

Re: $4.00 per gallon gas?

*sigh*
does this "stock" talk do anything for those who strive to make 20k a year?
maybe if we wern't able to drive to wal mart so easily, then we would be likely to buy so much crap
if i have to walk to the grocery store, i'm less likely to carry home a 2lt of soda
this may not be such a bad thing....

Re: $4.00 per gallon gas?

i know this is kinda off the subject, but i think the anicdote is apt
my roomate is a photographer who's pretty much been put out of work by digital cameras, most places don't offer printing anymore, business are shutting their doors...kodak, fuji, polaroid are all curbing their photo development
now...
it's almost like before these business were around, people are starting to "develop" their own methods for photography again, we'll see new methods come about due to this, or a reinventing of the old ways, photography on glass or tin
similar with cars... we may see more sled dogs in the winter, fire burning engines, new houses being built with fireplaces, homemade solar pannels
we may be at the crux of people disallusioned by being fed by big business, more and more we'll revert to the do it yourself

Re: $4.00 per gallon gas?

well, now I don't think we'd go that far back, but another problem is anyone that comes up with alternative ideas, the gov't buys them out and owns the idea

Re: $4.00 per gallon gas?

More people are buying hybrids and they are working on engines that run on hydrogen engines..
The Toyota Preus get over 300 miles to one tank of gas -around 50 miles to the gallon. It runs about $20,000 new.

Re: $4.00 per gallon gas?

Don't know where you are getting your propaganda from 3M... BUT... I have a customer with two Hybrids... He boasts 31 MPG... (I got that with my '96 Dodge Grand Caravan, 3.8 liter)...

He paid $10,000.00 over premium over other cars...

And it is projected that he will need to replace his BIG batteries in 5 years at a cost of $4000.00 a battery... (There are 2 batteries in the Toyota Peius)...

And it is proven that hybrid vehicles pollute more because a cold engine starting takes more fuel to start - releasing more hydro-carbons into the atmosphere...

And a Hybrid's engine is all the time starting and stopping...

Many a case study has proven ... There is no cost savings nor is there any enviromental savings to owning a hybrid vehicle....

Re: $4.00 per gallon gas?

Hydrogen powered vehicles are a whole different animal....

It hasn't been proven safe... It takes an extremely controlled enviroment to produce...
And to produce hydrogen you have to release carbon into the air.... (Further increasing greenhouse gasses....)

Re: $4.00 per gallon gas?

$5.00 a gallon for gas will be BETTER for the earth in the long run! Until we hit that, people will rather spend the time to bitch about it than actually do something to not pay it.

I bought my Elantra for $11,000 brand new, with a 100,000 mile warranty. Its got 109,000 on it now, and still gets 30 miles per gallon. I didn't buy it when gas prices were high, I needed a reliable car that was good on gas, and for whatever reason (HOMO?), I like smaller cars.

As long as companies realize that people aren't lowering consumption, the prices will rise.

Exxon isn't even embarrassed anymore by their record setting profits every year. They must think "Well, they're the stupid ones for buying all this crap!", we'd be stupid not to take their money.
