| Strange Cass County News SEARCH WARRANT OPERATION -- Authorities are releasing only limited information about a series of search warrants served in eastern Cass County Thursday. The warrants were served with the intention of gathering evidence in a multi-county investigation, according to a news release. That investigation remains ongoing. No one was arrested as the warrants were served at eleven locations: five in Plattsmouth, three in Murray, one in Nehawka, one in the rural Beaver Lake area and one in rural Union. There were some residents at the locations when the search warrants were served but no one was taken into custody. The press release states no arrests were anticipated. Sheriff William C. Brueggemann said 57 officers from the Bellevue Police Dept., Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Plattsmouth Police Dept. and the D.E.A. were assisted by members of the South Metro SWAT Team. Anyone around the area of the courthouse about 8:30am couldn’t help but notice dozens of armed officers outfitted with vests and protective gear loading into vehicles, including a large paneled truck. A local police scanner broadcast about 8:45am stated the special operation was underway. Word had soon spread of lockdowns in the Plattsmouth and Conestoga Schools. Plattsmouth Superintendent Dr. Richard Hasty said the district had been alerted that a warrant operation would be conducted and the district issued a modified lockdown for about 45 minutes. He described a modified lockdown as one where students and teachers are allowed to move about inside the school as normal but are not allowed to leave the school. Brueggemann said there were no anticipated or actual threats to the schools and this also served as an opportunity to test the safety procedures. Toward the end of the operation the serial numbers of several guns were radioed back to the City/County Law Enforcement Center. Officers began returning to the LEC after 11am. Cassgram talked with one of the local narcotics investigators following the operation. He said the only information that could be given out would be in the news release.

| Re: Strange Cass County News Update: ARREST WARRANTS ISSUED -- Federal drug indictments for several local individuals were handed down last week. Teams of drug enforcement agents and police officers took to the streets Thursday afternoon in Plattsmouth and Cass County with warrants for 10 individuals. Drug investigators tell Cassgram this is probably the largest one-time roundup of drug suspects in this area. Cassgram went along with one pair of officers as two arrests were made Thursday afternoon—one in Plattsmouth and one in Malvern, Iowa. The arrest warrants on federal charges of conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine were the result of months of undercover work and surveillance. The arrests are related to the search warrant operation that involved 57 officers serving warrants at 11 locations in eastern Cass County earlier this month. (see Cassgram Online 3/7/08) Drug investigators testified before a federal grand jury last week and produced evidence that led to the indictments. The complete list of those indicted and those arrested to this point is not available yet through the U.S. District Attorney’s Office. The investigators Cassgram rode with made their first arrest in Plattsmouth, asking neighbors and known associates for information on the whereabouts of the male suspect. Wearing bulletproof vests clearly marked police, the officers were blunt and said they had arrest warrants they were serving. The people they spoke to willingly provided the information requested. The second arrest came about as investigators used tips they gained from the first arrest and other sources. One of the officers made a call to the suspect’s cell phone and used that information to gain the suspect’s confidence. It was determined the suspect was on his way to Malvern. After checking out some Malvern houses that investigators had previously set up surveillance on, the suspect was spotted driving in downtown Malvern. With one of the investigators being a member of the federal drug task force, he had authority to make the arrest out of Nebraska. Neither suspect offered any resistance when arrested. Plattsmouth Police Narcotics Detective Dave Walker believes this operation will put a "huge dent" in the methamphetamine trade in this area. While more arrests are likely in the months ahead, he says that word of these arrests will no doubt have an impact on local meth users and manufacturers and hopefully will prompt them to change their ways. Local meth arrests on state charges were more common just a couple of years ago. But now investigators are using undercover operations and surveillance to gain enough evidence over several months to obtain federal charges. Federal drug convictions carry stiffer penalties than state convictions. The Cass County Sheriff’s Department and Plattsmouth Police Department gained new tools, manpower assistance and more funding possibilities when the departments became members of the Omaha area’s Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force in 2006.
