| I posted a comment to this story on WOWT I posted a comment on the WOWT website shortly after the story ran on their newscast. As of 1:20 p.m. 6/21, they hadn't "approved" it. Gee, I wonder why?  Here's the story and you guys tell me what you think - Mercury Raises Eyebrows - Company says reference is to battery A heartland woman got a jolt recently when she took a look at a label that warned of mercury in a child's toy motorcycle. Jackie Hendrix treats the kids in her care like her own grandchildren. She took Austin, Muryn and Robby to a Dollar Tree store on Thursday and says, "I basically went up for colors and a coloring book for the kids and then he (Robby) saw the motorcycle and couldn't resist it. And I thought okay, he's been a good boy. And then we run into this." "This" was the information that Jackie found on the label but she didn't notice it until Robby tossed the packaging on the ground. Jackie says, "I picked up the package it had been in to throw away and on the back side I saw that it contained mercury. It's hazardous material." Channel 6 News contacted the Dollar Tree store where Jackie says she bought the toy. They referred us to corporate headquarters. A spokesperson for Dollar Tree explained that the mercury warning refers to the battery inside the motorcycle and not the toy itself. Now here is the comment I tried to make: "This story is absolutely shameless fear mongering. The mercury is inside the battery. The title and lead in of the story made it seem as though the toy was covered in mercury, when, in fact, it's actually just the battery - which is NORMAL. This is not anything like the unlabeled lead paint covered toys. Is there really any parent dumb enough out there to let their child take out a battery and chew on it? (Maybe that is a silly question.) " Thoughts anyone?

| Re: I posted a comment to this story on WOWT Another reason I haven't watched the news in many years. I get all the news I need on the net. Click on what you want to read and skip over the BS. I remember breaking open an old house thermometer once as a kid to collect the "pure" mercury. We played with that stuff for quite awhile until we dropped it in the grass and couldn't get it back up. I'm just a little drain bamaged from it.  |

| Re: I posted a comment to this story on WOWT People would be surprised that the auto industry uses a shit load of mercury switches in their ABS brake systems and under hood light switches. I've got a bottle full of mercury at the shop and no adverse effects here...
