The second half of May 2008, I'm working on performance improvements on the site.

One of the biggest improvements was the upgrade of the forum software, and the switch to a different "Throcks" economy. Also, the zoints system was removed which freed up more disk space than actually sped up performance. The removal of these systems helped get rid of a number of tables and indexes that those systems used, so hopefully database queries are lessoned.

One thing I added to conserve bandwidth was adding a "stolen bandwidth" graphic to images on tntu.net that are hosted on other sites. This worked pretty well, until I noticed that Cox.net users saw the "stolen bandwidth" graphic ALL over the place, including all the tntu.net images on the site.

NOTE - If you are a Cox.net customer and/or saw this strange image plastered all over the forums, please let me know so that I can test some things out with you before I turn this feature on again.

Another big improvement will be upgrading the site from MySQL 4.0 to MySQL 5.0, which is scheduled for 5/20 or 5/21. This supposedly should improve database performance.

In another effort to reduce database queries, I've removed a couple of features that weren't inherently being used on the forums. If you notice something missing or different, ask me about it, those features were removed to save some resources.

The old "Todd and Tyler" quote system was a database of random images that appeared on the top of each page. That system has been replaced with a non-database system, which should save at least one query a page.

So that's the state of the site at the moment. Personally, site performance should be adequate. If you are seeing unnecessary slowdowns, send me a PM, and I'll see if its site, database, router, DNS, or what the problem is.

Database upgrades have been performed.

As a result, everybody's attachments and anybody's avatar they're uploaded to the site it corrupted. I'm looking into the problem.

In order to fix the problem, if you can't see your avatar, you can re-upload it and it should work fine. Sorry for the hassle.

Only issue I have is with the animated ads... They seem to make the site run a bit slow while they upload. And i wish the ad at the top could be moved lower than the shout box... Would save a lot of scrolling time...

Other than those two issues, great work Dave!!!

I'm looking into the ads, I don't think the animated ones are helping the site much more than the textual ones.

I know what you're saying about the shoutbox and the ads. The problem is that the "top" ad system is part of the $navbar template (which displays the navigation bar at the top). The shoutbox gets inserted just below that template.

If I move the ad outside of the $navbar template, and below the shout box, then I have to add the ad code to every page in the forums that display the navbar, and this particular style has enough changes in it that I don't want to change almost all of them just to get the shoutbox above the ad display. Believe me, I've wrestled with it quite a bit since its been installed! I may have to look at the shoutbox code, and see if it can be inserted somewhere else.

I'll look at resizing the shoutbox. The goal is to get people chattin' in the forums, the shoutbox is a nicety and can be a resource hog at times.

I finally got those toned down, but there's still an ungodly number of them roaming around. Google's never been too much of a problem, it usually keeps pretty consistent with one spider crawling around.

For whatever reason, Yahoo's search has more TnTU pages indexed (40,000) than Google (6700). I wish that wasn't the case, but oh well.
