| You Gotta Love Those Marines Marine Corps General Reinwald was interviewed on the radio the other day, and here is his reply to the lady who interviewed him concerning guns and children. Regardless of how you feel about gun laws, You gotta love this!!!! This is one of the best comeback lines of all time. It is a portion of National Public Radio (NPR) interview between a female broadcaster and US Marine Corps General Reinwald who was about to sponsor a Boy Scout Troop visiting his military installation. FEMALE INTERVIEWER: So, General Reinwald, what things are you going to teach these young boys when they visit your base? GENERAL REINWALD: We're going to teach them climbing, canoeing, archery, and shooting. FEMALE INTERVIEWER: Shooting! That's a bit irresponsible, isn't it? GENERAL REINWALD: I don't see why, they'll be properly supervised on the rifle range. FEMALE INTERVIEWER: Don't you admit that this is a terribly dangerous activity to be teaching children? GENERAL REINWALD: I don't see how. We will be teaching them proper rifle discipline before they even touch a firearm. FEMALE INTERVIEWER: But you're equipping them to become violent killers. GENERAL REINWALD: Well, Ma'am, you're equipped to be a prostitute, but you're not one, are you? The radio went silent and the interview ended.

| Re: You Gotta Love Those Marines there are 5 marines and 1 navy corpsman who raised "ole glory" on Mt Suribachi in Iwo Jima, the photographer took the picture to where you could not make out the faces of the individuals who planted to keep them anonymous "so im a geek....." But i am a Marine

My father was friends with the marine who took that famous photo. Did you know that the one we all see was a retake. A group of marines had already raised the flag. The commanding officer wanted a pic and film of them raising the flag to celebrate the victory. So they took it down and did it over. I have photos around somewhere of the event that not many people have seen. If I can find them I'll put them up if anyone is interested.

| Re: You Gotta Love Those Marines As some of you know or don't know that you can request a flag that has been flown over the capital, white house, monument, etc.... When I was on a tour of the DC we say this being done at the Iwo Jima momument. This monument is the easiest to do. We watched as they raised the American Flag, saluted it and then lowered the flag and refolded it. Then repeat this process. The usually do this at night, so they are not bothered. It was pretty interesting to watch. The guys who do this do it with such pride as if it was the first time they are doing this. I know I'm a geek..... If I got any of this wrong please let me know...

If you're looking for a great summer read, try Flag of Our Fathers, which is about the raising of the flag, and the men who did so. Anyway, the reason I asked, is, since I'm taking 8th graders to DC next week, I started doing research and found that, depending on the angle, the Iwo Jima monument has only 9 or 11 legs. I was just curious if anyone knew why this was.

I was just wondering if anyone knew this to be true (I don't want to tell my students one thing, and then look like an idiot when we find out I'm wrong...that happens enough as it is)

| Re: You Gotta Love Those Marines It's not a legend according to the Army.... I had to know this for my Sgt. board test about Army history. Inside is a razor blade, a match, and a .45 caliber cartridge. They are purely symbolic but they are there.... Under attack and you are the last soldier alive on the base, you are to use the razor blade to seperate the stripes from the field and seperate the stars from the field. You are to use the match to set fire to the flag to dispose of it, and you are to use the .45 cartridge on your self.... I always found that funny. That I had to know that for my testing.... I wanted to ask the Seargent Major how the hell I was supposed to get to the damn ball! Somebody told me to use a tank to knock down the flag pole.... I said if I had a tank I wouldn't care about the flag pole... I'd just run the enemy over......

In days gone by it was in practice at most military installations around the world. A pistol was placed in a box at the bottom of the pole and a single bullet was placed in the gold ball at the top. A soldier is to defend the flag to the death if it were to fall. its not a myth...

| Re: You Gotta Love Those Marines Thanks Ox... I forgot about the 1911 .45 ACP at the base of the pole.... I pulled base duty for three months during an intensive Europe wide training exercise... I was tasked with posting and retiring the base Colors for 90 straight days.... I LOVED it! Everybody had huge pride in what we did! We also had to retire the German flag at the same time.... It was funny. The American flag required 6 people to fold. The German flag required 2........ You folded it, length wise, twice then rolled it up like a burrito... I believe that the practice of defending the flag from falling was started in the Civil War.... The poor little 10 - 14 year old boys that were the Guidon Bearers and Drummers were usually the first targets in a battle.... Too many brain cells gone to remember that stuff....
