A new laser hair treatment gives personality to your bikini area

It's a given that good grooming is essential to having great hair, but what about hair care down there? Clearly, an unkempt look is intolerable no matter where it is. And these days it's not enough to give the bikini area a good trimming -- styling is now involved.

Every spa calls it something different, but for Ideal Image, a laser hair removal clinic, it's the "Flare 'Do."
"We get a lot of Lucky Charms requests," said Wes Harris, owner of Ideal Image. "You know, hearts, moons, clovers and diamonds. They like those."
"They" are the droves of women -- and some men -- who are spending as much time and money on the hair south of the border as they are on the hair atop their head. Harris' patients pay anywhere from $730 to $1,450 for a full treatment (five sessions done, typically, every 10 weeks) to put the design of their choice underneath their panties.
The most popular request in his Vegas spas, is none other than the "Vegas" extended bikini treatment. Running $940 for all five treatments, or $90 a month, this design is also affectionately referred to as "The Strip."
The "Classic," which is equivalent in haircutting terms to taking a little off the sides, is big with the Midwestern girls.
And the "Rio" is the Full Monty. Whereas with the two aforementioned styles, the panties need not be removed, there's no way around it with the "Rio."
"They take it all (off) with the 'Rio' -- or the Brazilian," Harris said, referring to where the style originated (it's no coincidence that's also where the thong debuted).
If images of Dr. Evil's cat are being conjured, you may find it surprising that the bald look is growing in popularity around the country. According to Harris, most men who request a Flare 'Do, ask for the "Rio."
"It's big with both sexes, the metros and the gay population, too," he said. "They find it to be cleaner and neater."
Because laser hair removal is permanent, the "Rio" actually acts as something for indecisive clients to fall back on. If, say, they end up regretting lasering a star in their bikini pubic hair, they can always remove it all -- similar to a tattoo cover-up, except there's nothing to show for it.
What would possess someone to permanently put a star down there?
"It's not for anyone else, it's for themselves, really," Harris said. "Besides, doesn't everyone want that star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame some way or another?"
For those looking for something that doesn't require a lifetime commitment, a good waxing usually lasts about four to six weeks. The level of discomfort, however, is kicked up a notch.
"If you're doing the hair on your labia, the pain level is intense," said Jamie Lee Metz, owner of Jamie Lee Metz Advanced Aesthetics, LLC. "There's no way around it."
But, Metz added, waxing the hair on the backside is virtually painless.
Metz' prices run from $15 for the "Bottoms Up" (just the bottom) to $60 for "Above and Beyond," which is -- like the "Rio" -- everything.
Other designs consist of The Runway (a small strip), Sideburns (upside down triangle), The Martini Glass (smaller upside down triangle), Sweet Heart (yes, a heart) and Think Outside the Box. (a tiny box reminiscent of Hitler's moustache). Waxings take about 45 minutes from start to finish.
Well attuned to the fact bikini grooming isn't your ordinary spa treatment, Metz and her staff are sensitive to their client's apprehensions.
"We have them strip down and then we keep them in as comfortable a position as possible," said Metz, who opts for a sideways laying down position as opposed to the down on all fours one many spas favor.
"They're already pretty vulnerable and it can be pretty awkward if you've never done it before."
Metz says most of her clients are between 30 and 40 years old and are career women. Their reasoning for grooming their bikini areas vary from hygiene purposes to simple vanity.
"Honestly, a lot of it's about the lingerie that's out today," she said. "I mean, who wants to put on some beautiful Victoria's Secret lingerie and have two poofs coming out on the sides?"
