| Fear me, if you dare! ![]() ![]() | One City...you know the rest OK so this is about the school situation, which I care about, and here is my opinon. Segregation doesn't work, we know this, so now despite all of the reasons that we need to get the OPS school system together, it is decided that it should be split apart even more. This makes no sense. So this is an open forum to discuss this. I only have the fear that if we start with this, what is next? Do I have to start wearing petticoats again, and teachers who are pregnant will have to stop coming to school at all, and we can't be seen out with men unless we are accompanied by a member of our family? Cuz that just isn't gonna work for TG and I! How far are we willing to let it go? Teacher or not, voice up, don't get offended (that means you) and let's hear the opinions pro and con. Lynniebits

| Re: One City...you know the rest Where does the money come to pay for new school boards, superintendents, and administrations. And where do they house them the norht omaha district offices at Time Out Chicke, the South Omaha District offices at Guaca Maya, and the West Omaha ones will be based @ Westroads. You know where the money will come from.. "teachers salaries" and that means the truly important people in the schools will be even more underpaid, and in the long run more good teachers will leave the profession to get paid more running a Burger King. Dave your a little off saying you want Chambers representin!!!! In my opinion if your senator is doing there job you shouldnt have to know their name. Unless, like Mr Chambers, you are a racist hypocrit with personal vendettas and angles... and your out to do one thing "make a name for yourself". If your are in your district you should thank him for costing your neighborhood a couple hundred jobs, by killing the stadium bill, and ask him why he didnt speak up against ending bussing in 1999 if its so important to him, unless it just happens to fit his agenda now!!!!

| Off The Deep End ![]() ![]() | Re: One City...you know the rest Okay my 2 cents worth, I disagree with splitting OPS into 3 districts, but I also disagree with what OPS was trying to pull in taking over parts of the other districts, I think all that was, was a grab for money when OPS according to statistics in the World Herald already gets a disproportionate amount of state and federal dollars.

What I wait to see is when Ernie gets re-elected via write in, what court in this country is going to throw somebody out that is popularly elected by the people he represents.

And yes it is about money, their tax dollars that are in our city that pays for their schools. That would be like 1/4 for your tax $$$$ for schools in Norfolk (they doe have schools dont they???) going to Collumbus

| If you give me enough throcks, I'll play with your ![]() ![]() | Re: One City...you know the rest Statistically, (and, again, 68% of statistics are made-up) people with lower socio-economic backgrounds are at an educational disadvantage. This does NOT mean they are stupid, dumb, or unable to learn. It simply implies that these individuals have more difficulty in getting a well-rounded education.

| Fear me, if you dare! ![]() ![]() | Re: One City...you know the rest No, because they don't have money they are lacking in things that modern day schools need to be functional. If the area doesn't have money, then based on the taxes neither does the school.

| Fear me, if you dare! ![]() ![]() | Re: One City...you know the rest Taxes are based on location. If a district doesn't get taxes from some places, such as NFM or the Riverfront project, then they are vastly reduced to their resources. Of course it is about money...isn't it always?

| Fear me, if you dare! ![]() ![]() | Re: One City...you know the rest Well all that is kinda over, so who cares? I am not saying OPS had the right idea, but the new plan isn't any better, and it has been on the table for what a week?

| Fear me, if you dare! ![]() ![]() | Re: One City...you know the rest My point was not to start problems, but to spark interest. I live in Council Bluffs, so I don't really care what Omaha does! But Oprah had on a show yesterday about schools in crisis, and part 2 is today, and people need to wake up and pay attention to their schools. Kids or not, you need to know what is happening in your community.

| Re: One City...you know the rest Heres the deal the article you sent basically states that OPS spends only about $200 more per student then the other districts, if you look at the #'s and dont know what its about then yeah it might be puzzling. The fact is that OPS has many more ESL, SPED, and Low income students, and is spending much more money to pay for ESL Services, sped services, and stuff to just catch kids up that dont get educated at home (low income i speak more later about this). All of these cost alot more than an aveage students income. And Because we have so many more of these students than the suburban schools..... a great % of the aver. per pupil # is spent on that. Meaning for all are kids to get an "equal education" it will cost more! As for low income students. It is common knowledge that students that come from families that dont have alot of money start off with far less academically than rich kids. This is and isnt allways the parents fault. Some families whos moms stay at home, take the kids to education outings, have time to read with the kids, and many other things will naturally send their kids so school with a better base (just like sports wich is why OPS is falling behind their too, bu thats a whole other can of worms). Some parents work 2 full time jobs, cant afford to buy books or take time to read to them, cant afford a good educational daycare, dont know how to speak and teacher their kids to speak english, and yes some are crackheads and other things.... these kids are gonna be behind from the start!!!!! Thats what we deal with...... My kdg kids are learning to tie their shoes, speak a few english words, and just learning the basics of reading, while the majority of kids in families with money start kdg with advanced reading and writing skills.
