Refinishing my wood

Refinishing my wood floors. Old house (circa 1918) and the floors may never have been redone. Am sanding now, but some spots the stain won't come up and I am afraid to keep going over it. So could use some advice if anyone has any to give.
What about chemicals to strip the wood?

Re: Refinishing my wood

If they are dark stains, like urine stains from dogs, Then I have no idea what to use to try and suck the stain out of the wood.... You might have to ask someone at Menards or Home Depot....

Yeah, they ought to know for sure and have the product on hand, if there is one....

Re: Refinishing my wood

Yes you can get a floor stripper.... You put the stipper on the floor and let it sit for the required time, then you have to use something to push the stripper off the wood - (spackle knife- ??) It takes a really long time and lots of energy because you will have to strip the whole floor or it won't ever match..

Re: Refinishing my wood

Rent sander from Menards and plan on spending a butt load of money on sanding pads. You can rent elsewhere but the sander Menards rents is more user friendly and requires less "expertise" than other sanders. The wrong sander in the hands of inexperienced person WILL result in a less than desireable conclusion. Remove all baseboards and SAND SAND SAND. Use all grits of paper starting with coarse across entire surface then to medium across entire surface then finest. Coarse sanding pads from Menards only effectively sand <10 sq. ft. of surface area so buy accordingly. Don't worry about sanding through wood more than likely its at least 5/8 in. thick. It's a lot of work but you need to sand off all previous poly and stain. All of it, and when you think it's all gone sand some more. You really need to expose new wood acroos floors entire surface to get good results. If you don't all previous stain, poly or sanding marks will show. Sanding is VERY important so take your time and do it right. It is VERY INTENSE tiring work and probably best left to pro. Not saying you can't do it. It's just they have the right tools and equipment and that makes it easier.

Re: Refinishing my wood

Well so far I am sanding my damn arms off, but it looks sweet! I rented the big sander and got as much off as I could, and yes I spent a butt load on sanding pads. Then I took that 10,000 lb thing back and bought a small sander. It works like a charm, and the belts aren't quite as expensive, but it makes my arms feel like jello after about 3 hours of sanding. Let's just say I know my floor intimately. It is really fun, but I am saving a few thousand dollars...so totally worth it.
