I was Scammed!

So Saturday evening a buddy and me went to the Mall of the Bluffs. We're walking down the parking lot when a guy comes up to us. He gives us a story about how his truck is broke down. Shows us a estimate receipt for a fuel filter then says he could use some help.

You have to understand that this guy was wearing a Chilis managers outfit...or what we thought was one. We don't usually go to Chilis but just took his word. He was very nice to us, didn't pressure us for help. But the nice guys(suckers) we are we decided to help him. So we give him some money cause he says he will pay us back. He shows us a business card for Chilis to make us think he was legit. He also says he will get us some free food from there as well. So we thought we were in like Flint here. Basically getting a free meal.

We even take him to the part store and he thanks us many times. We decide to go back to my buddies place and then go to Chilis later on. I decided to check in just to make sure the guy was in fact legit. (yea, we should have done it while he was around). But it turned out the guy didn't even work for any Chilis anywhere. We were pissed! We went back looking for some sweet sweet revenge, but he was already gone.

So I'm out 20 bucks and my buddy is out 80. Call us stupid or whatever. We were just being nice. We don't even deserve sympathy for it. But we will never trust anyone we don't know again. At least a lesson was learned.

Re: I was Scammed!

What a small world!

A guy aproached my wife in the Sears parking lot of the Bluffs Mall asking for money for a broke car... She got the hell away from him and into the store fast. She didn't know about the posability of a scam, she just doesn't trust strangers....

Sorry to hear that Tat.. Hard lesson learned...

Ok - sorry but don't give money to bums by the interstate with the signs - Those are scams as well. I watched one guy who stood there and collected money for about 30 minutes - he then pulled out a wad of cash - there must have been about $300 there. Then left walked about 3 blocks to a brand new truck got in and left.

Usually the ones that need help will never ask for it. They are the ones that work hard to try to make it but need a little help.

Re: I was Scammed!

A local news station did a story on that a few of years ago except the guy they filmed walked a few blocks to a shiney Mercedes.

On that same note,M there is a guy just east of where I live who stands on the same corner every day with his luggage. He's been there for a couple years now. Friends of mine have tried to give him money but he refuses it. I don't get that either.

last year around my birthday we were sitting downtown outside and a guy walked by. My friend offered him a beer since he had an old Metallica shirt on. So he just sat with us and we talked to him. He was one of those hardworkers....at least we think he was cause he was planning on making his way to New Orleans because he heard they needed help after the hurricane.

Maybe I should volunteer for something...big brothers/big sisters or maybe some organization. But I know even some charity organizations don't work under the way most people would prefer.

Re: I was Scammed!

Well I can tell you that any non-profit organization has certain rules that they must follow or they lose their government funding. Big Brothers and Big Sister is a very good organization- I could give you a list if you would like. Also know that when you give money to an organization - you can specify where that money goes - you can say - I want this to go to ___ and if they take your money they have to do what you wanted with it.

We really had trouble for a while with people in our parking lot, gas money was the ploy and they kept showing up, ended up caling the cops on several of them.

Re: I was Scammed!

Was driving home from a band gig one late winter night in 03. Felt pretty good cuz I was flush ..ha ha ...pulled up to a covience store to fill up my ole Taurus ..noticed some dude hanging out ...tells me the clerk wouldn't let him inside because he was 'loitering'..I'm like dude ..its a cold one man ..he wont let you in ?..geez ..anyway he asked me for 40.00 so he could get a room at the motel across the street . Yah..I gave him 40.00 ...what the hell ..saw him walk over to the hotel ...I 'm assuming he checked in ..I suppose I could've used the 40.00 for something but I felt kinda generous that night:)

Well Tat as a very wise man named Earl would say it is Karma. Good for you cuz you tried to help someone who was in need (or at least you thought he was), and bad for him if he scammed you.

On the other hand maybe he needed the money for something else, like food. OK maybe he was using it on crank, but I like to try and find the good in people. I understand the anger though.

A good deed is still good, even if the person that it was done to doesn't actually need it.
