| The stickiest of the ickiest ![]() ![]() | For the mecahnic crew..... I know there are a few of you (or at least one of you) that frequent this board that is / are a mechanic. To make the story short, the transmission on my stealth has been giving me fits lately. A bunch of shops have told me it needs rebuilt, but they all want to charge me around 4K to do it. Here is a link to a craigslist posting I posted recently: Rebuild my transmission, get yourself a free car Any takers??? Or has anybody ever had experience rebuilding a transmission of this sort? Should it really cost 4,000?

| Re: For the mecahnic crew..... Details... Year, make, model (exact), Transmission (3spd or OD), engine size (overhead cam, single or double?) What's the transmission doing? I can at least tell you what a ballpark estimate should be... I've never seen any tranny that was rebuilt for 4K... That's just plain rediculous... I've rebuilt over 50 of the Chrysler OD trannys with the most expensive being around $1,600 because it required a new case and a bunch of hard parts... (Includes R&R of the tranny)... Damn! 4K... I am definatley working in the wrong location.....

| The stickiest of the ickiest ![]() ![]() | Re: For the mecahnic crew..... Details...... Year: 1992 Make: Dodge Model: Stealth RT Twin Turbo Transmission: 5 speed manual engine size: V6 (I beleive 3.0 litre) DOHC What's the transmission doing: It started out shifting a little notchy from 1st to 2nd. Then all of a sudden, just one day, it would not shift unless the RPM's were at just the right range, and when it finally did go into gear and you were driving down the road, it would make a really annoying high pitched whining noise. Someone recommended checking the fluid, but that was done about a month before this all started happening. Never the less, I am going to go home and check it tonight........ Can you estimate what it would cost for a rebuild without even seeing it???? Sounds like it should be less than 4K

| Re: For the mecahnic crew..... Labor, at the most, would be 15 hours to R&R and rebuild @ $55.00 an hour, here, that is $825.00.... Gawd only knows what parts you are looking at replacing, Shifting fork pads and syncro gears are a given, though... But I very seriously doubt that parts would cost $3000.00 bucks!!! I bet if you called Kosiski Auto Parts (800)-228-0053, In Omaha, They could shoot you one helluva deal on a used tranny... Let me know... On another note... Has anybody added any fluid to the tranny lately? If so, did they add the right fluid? Most manual trannys take either ATF or 5W-30 fluid. If somebody has added 80W-90 fluid, then it won't shift worth a shit!!! And disregard whatever Mike say's... He can't fix his own tonka truck..

| Re: For the mecahnic crew..... Just checked the Manual and they are right. It is 75W-85W or GL-4 ONLY You just might want to check fluid condition and maybe flush out the tranny and replace with new fluid first... And check for any metal while you are at it. Drag a small magnet through the drain hole to see if you get any big chunks. If all you see is "gold" colored metal. Then that means you need to replace the brass syncronizer gears. If you see anything else, then be leary...

| Re: For the mecahnic crew..... It's got to be 75W-85W Or GL-4!!! They are special synthetic oils... Use anything else and you will tear the tranny up for sure....

| The stickiest of the ickiest ![]() ![]() | Re: For the mecahnic crew..... What I used was GL4, but it was a heavier weight.......... After I changed it I only drove it about a block. It shifted 100% better but there is still a whining noise. Not as loud as before, but it's still there. The only other thing I know for sure is wrong with the car, is that the throwout bearing is getting noisy, but I've never heard one make this type of noise before.........

| The stickiest of the ickiest ![]() ![]() | Re: For the mecahnic crew..... Well, I filled it up with synchromesh last night, and things are still not looking good for the home team. When I was able to drain the transaxle that actually had a decent amount of fluid in it, there was a bit of brass that came out with it. It does still shift better, except for going into 1st gear. You have to be at a dead stop to be able to shift into first gear. As far as the odd noise it is making, it did get much quieter, but it did not go away. It's always such a pain in the neck for me to try to describe noises......but you remember the small cars you had as a kid, where if you would push them on the floor forward a few times it would wind them up and they would coast on their own for a while? Well it sounds like you wound one up, and then just picked it up......that type of whining noise. I know, ridiculous comparison but that's all I could think of.I did notice, that when I was in 1st and 2nd, the noise either was not there, or too quite to hear. 3rd and 4th it was there, but at a lower pitch, and then as soon as I'd hit 5th it would bump the pitch up quite a bit. I dunno if that means anything or can help identify the problem, but I thought I would try My best guess is that some or all of the synchros are at least shot, due to the 1st gear grinding issue. The whining noise I've got nothing on.

| Re: For the mecahnic crew..... You definately have a 1rst gear syncro out... The whining noise *which you described perfectly* is probably a bearing in the tranny.. The bearing probably has some pits on the race... It will eventually get worse and start to "rumble" or "growl" more...
