Anybody know about animal health???

Here is the story from the beginning of it.

My wife and I were in a car accident and we were both in the hospital for 2 days. I then came home, and my wife stayed in the hospital for a while longer. When she is away for long periods of time, our dog (she is a female mid sized terrier, about 7 human years old) does get very sad, and kind of mopes around a bit.

It was just about 4 days ago when I realized she was getting very skinny. Much skinnier than I have ever seen her. She also had no interest in food. At that time I chalked it up to her being upset that my wife was still in the hospital and not at home.

Now my wife has been home for 3 days now, and still nothing has changed. The dog still will not eat very good, and has litte interest in food still. I am beginning to get quite worried because she is getting very low on strength too. She has a hard time going up and down stairs, and even though she LOVES to come on to the bed and sleep with us at night (because she hardly ever gets to sleep actually on the bed), she will not even do that any more. Her gums are not pink like usual but kind of a grey color as well. Her eyes seem to be clear and I have not noticed anything else odd. Her attitude still remains the same as it was before my wife was home though, she is still very sad and lacks energy like she used to have.
My question is this. Is this something that can just happen in a weeks time like this? Is she really sick, or will it just take time of my wife being home for longer for the dog to return to normal?

Any suggestions or comments would make me feel alot better. I am going to call a local vet tomorrow and talk to them as well but I figured I could try this tonight just to see what kind of responses I get.

Thanks again!!

Re: Anybody know about animal health???

Your dog could very well be going through separation anxiety... Only you know how attached your dog is to you or your wife... And to what degree it's anxiety will be.... But, my first piece of advice would be, is to see a vet...

Take her to a vet. I think she might have eaten something while you guys were gone.

Re: Anybody know about animal health???

What type of terrier do you have? I have two rat terriers and they both suffer from seperation anxiety and also can stress themselves into becoming ill. I've been to the vet many times for my dogs. I agree take her to the vet. My one dog can be fine one minute and ill the next. If you and your wife were gone and her routine was turned upside down she could have stressed herself out enough that she is sick.

See, we were both gone for quite some time, and when I was home it was enough to let her out and then for me to leave again. That in fact did turn her routine an absolute 180.

I'm hoping this is all anxiety related, but we'll see at the vet tomorrow......

Re: Anybody know about animal health???

I agree on both parts. Separation anxiety and the vet. Our terrier and my grandparents poodle both did that and like Chubby said after they do it for so long it just makes them sick. She could be dehydrated to the point that she can't drink and past the point of real hunger, just from not doing them both for so long.
Let us know !

Thank you all for your kind thoughts. The wife and I are doing better, and I'm calling the vet right now. I'll post back with my findings later.

Re: Anybody know about animal health???

Well I just got back from the vet.

The doc's opinion is that the dog really is very sick, rather than just a seperation anxiety related issue.

They are going to run a bunch of tests and call me back either today or tomorrow AM.

I guess when it rains, it pours. ;)

Re: Anybody know about animal health???

Well this is what I found out from the vet.

She has a very low red blood cell count. I guess normal for dogs is 20%, and she is at 8%.

The vet used some huge word that I could never remember to explain to me what he thought was going on. But this is what I got out of it. For some reason her immume system thinks that it should be destroying red blood cells and it's doing so faster than they can be re created. That is why her gums are the yellow color that they are.

They have given her a large does of corizone which will basically make her immune system drop quite a bit, and in turn stop destroying so many red blood cells.

I then have to take her back tomorrow to have her count taken again. She may need to be on cortizone type pills for a while to get her count back up again.

So in short, she is still feeling under the weather. Hopefully the cortizone will do the trick though, because I've talked to 2 vets and both say that if this does not do the trick, even if we do treat her for more issues, she most likely does not have long anyways :(

Re: Anybody know about animal health???

I don't know if this will help but every once in a while I make a special meal for my dog who has quite a few allergies. I use scrambled eggs, white or brown rice, steamed carrots and either cooked chicken or fish (both cleaned very well). It is only a special treat she gets once in a while and she loves it. Maybe feeding your dog a bit something different might help. Don't forget to let the food cool a bit before you feed it to your pet.
