Hal Dawg is hangin' up the typewriter

Original post by Dave:

Damn, looks like Hal Dawg is hangin' up the typewriter...

It would be easy to pull the plug on this column with no public explanation. News directors and newsroom managers do it all the time when they have unpleasant news to share about talent being let go, poor ratings or format changes that will likely prove unpopular with their audiences.

But being in the "communication business," means keeping the channels open in both good and bad times. So look for the details on the end of four-plus years of column writing in the print edition of the City Weekly, available on newsstands Thursday.

Thank you to managing editor Jim Minge and the staff of the City Weekly for providing me the opportunity to share news and views about the media scene.

Sean, I hope the future holds great promise for you. If you ever get the urge to opine, please know you will always have an open forum here.

Its been a pleasure reading you!

So why would the details be only in the print edition?

Re: Hal Dawg is hangin' up the typewriter

Sean, I would like to know one thing. Why "Hal Dawg"? I understand he is/was the medias perverbial pot "O" gold. You either loved him or hated him. There was no in-between. At least for me. I did not like the guy at first. Then while on the campaign trail, during the Septemberfest balloon launch at the Aksarben infield I had the opportunity to have a fairly extended conversation with him. Beyond the goofiness of an Armani suited politician at a balloon launch was a guy who really cared about Omaha and its citizens.

so I ask again, why "Hal Dawg"? Is it a kinship or Jab.

Just curious...

I don't have the issue yet, but this is the cover, with a funny Todd and Tyler reference...

Re: Hal Dawg is hangin' up the typewriter

Here is Hal Dawg's (Sean Weide) full article:
Omaha City Weekly

It starts as....

Quote:
I was not fired.
That was one of nearly a half-dozen rumors that have been floating around since I announced last week that my final Media Watch column would be appearing soon in print. (It’s the one you’re reading now.) Of course, when it comes to working in the broadcast industry (which I am not), it’s not unusual to be let go “to spend more time with your family.”
So before I reveal the reason you will no longer see my bald head and smiling face grace the papers of the City Weekly, I have to share a few of the rumors of why I’m hanging it up.
  • That one Omaha TV station was paying me not to write the column to prevent it from being cast in a negative light.
  • That I am simply clearing the way for the return of the (now infamous) Omaha TV news blogger known as “Ted Brockman.” Though often accused of being “Ted,” I will put it in writing (again) that I am not him, nor do I know the identity of him or her.
  • That KFAB (1110 AM) radio talk show host Scott Voorhees (who writes a media-related column for the Midlands Business Journal) was scooping me too much, which my editors know was simply not the truth.

I actually saw "Hal Dawg" on another national forum board and thought it was a clever play on the former mayor's name. No feelings either way about him, though I know his former press secretary and she's doing well in the world of PR.

I would have enjoyed seeing your "plated" items come to fruition. One in particular....

Hal Daub (Hal Dawg) is a former mayor of Omaha.

He is quite the character....
