| Carl Edwards breaks thumb? Published Monday | July 23, 2007 I-80 Speedway: Injury dampens visit from Carl Edwards BY NICK RUBEK WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER GREENWOOD, Neb. — Carl Edwards' luck at Nebraska Raceway Park went from bad to worse Sunday night. ![]() Carl Edwards guides his No. 99 car past his father, Carl, Sr., on the third turn during their preliminary race Sunday night. The younger Edwards later was hurt in a crash and taken to an Omaha hospital. The NASCAR superstar was involved in a third-lap collision and left I-80 Speedway in the back of an ambulance. One track official said there had been talk of someone in the collision having a broken bone, and Carl's father, Carl Sr., said his son's hand "looked broken." A year after wrecking in the first three laps, Edwards didn't make it past the third lap again. Edwards started the 25-lap race on the inside of row eight and was making a charge into contention early when he hit the back of a car that had spun out and gotten into the wall along the backstretch. A 10-car pileup ensued and left Edwards' car mangled. He walked to his trailer, where he received medical attention for nearly 20 minutes before emerging with a bag draped around his right hand. He gave the crowd one last wave before getting into the back of the ambulance. Edwards was scheduled to leave Nebraska Sunday night for performance testing in Milwaukee today. Younger brother Kenny Edwards said Carl had been transferred to Lakeside Hospital in Omaha and was awaiting results. Kenny said he thought it was a broken thumb, probably caused when it was caught in the steering wheel during the collision. Kenny Edwards suffered the same injury in the collision and was shaking hands with his left hand after the race but said it wasn't as severe as his brothers. Before the accident, it was a decal on the back of the younger Edwards' car that had been Carl's biggest complaint. Kenny sported a "Carl Who?" decal on the spoiler of his No. 25 Super Late Model car, semi-mocking the hype surrounding his brother's appearance. "I didn't think it was very funny," Carl said tongue-in-cheek. "No, this is a great night. I love coming to this track. It's got such a great family atmosphere and it's just so fun racing here." That feeling of family was a major reason you couldn't get the smile off Carl Sr., before racing. The elder Edwards drove a Grand Nationals car that Kenny drives on Saturday nights. What, no car for mom? "She'd probably wreck us all," Kenny laughed. Carl Edwards leads the Busch series in points, and he's currently fifth in the Nextel Cup standings. The father of the two Edwards boys got the opportunity to race with both his sons for the first time in his life Sunday night. The elder Edwards ran a few hot laps with Carl and Kenny, and although he'd eventually finish near the back in both his heat race and the "A" feature and Carl suffered the injury, it was a special night for the Edwards family. "It's just an exciting time," Carl Sr. said. "Getting out there and running with both of my sons is something we'll never forget." After Kenny held off his older brother in a heat race a year ago, Carl Sr. said there's been a few reminders about who beat whom heads up. A 45-minute rain delay made for a late night and slick surface. Ed Kosiski grabbed a first-lap lead in the Super Late Model "A" feature and led throughout en route to victory. Kenny Edwards finished 12th after a pit stop following the collision, and Carl was credited with a 22nd-place finish. Jesse Sobbing won the Hobby Stock "A" feature, his third win of the season.
