I got an "invoice" in the mail from a "Preferred Platinum Plan", which originally looked like some kind of credit card promo mailer. It was mailed to a "Jeffery Dotson" with my house address.

I open it up and it's an invoice for $497.40 to a credit card I don't own for "personal" phone calls. It says that it was mailed as an invoice because a credit card may have denied the charges.

I'm not sure what to think about it at first, but I thought maybe it was a sneaky way of selling long distance or a credit card, or an identity theft protection plan.

So I called the 800 number, and woke up a woman who wanted to know what the account number was and what my name was. I wasn't about to give her my full name, and she got cranky and said "Well, I'll just find out what your name is from the caller id". and she hung up.

This customer service agent calls me back and I answer as "Preferred Platinum!" and she says "Hello mr. Dotson", I think you made these phone sex calls, and now you're trying to get out of them.

I'm trying to help HER out by letting her know that they have my address, but not my credit card, and not the right name! So we talk a little bit, and she refuses to believe me, and she then says "OK, I'll just file a police report and they can come get you", and she hangs up again!

So then I call her back and say "look, I'm just trying to help you out. I didn't want to give you my name because I thought you were running a scam, blah blah blah". She then says "Who do you know at the Red Lion?" and I say, nobody, that hotel has been closed for 10 years at least. This was where the calls originated from I guess.

Then she wants me to tell her who's voice is this, she thinks it may be a cousin or something of mine... she lets me listen to the voice of the dude that tried to make the charges, he has to record his name and address I guess to verify his information. When I hear the recording I say "It sounds like a black dude", she says "No it doesn't, I think you know who it is, you do don't you?!". WTF?!

At this point, I'm exasperated. I try to explain to her I can't sit on the phone talking phone sex for almost an hour at the non-existant red lion the day before my wife's birthday, that just couldn't happen. Of course, she doesn't believe this funny but true story either!

She then goes through a couple of local phone numbers with me and asks me if I know recognize them, which I don't, they aren't showing up on the online white pages or google either.

Anyway, I again to explain to her that I was just trying to help them out, and finally she just said that she'd file a credit card fraud report, which is exactly what must be going on. But the attitude that I was the perpetrator is what really drove me batty. Anything I said she said was a lie or a scam, and I just replied with "you think I'M trying to scam YOU? YOU sent me an invoice for PHONE SEX calls!".

Anyway, this is just a heads up. Here's the company in question. If you're into the phone sex thing, you may want to avoid dealing with this company, if they're listed anywhere you want to do "personal calls".

The problem should have stopped, when the Red Lion got brought up. I would have just told her to prove to me that the Red Lion exists.

wow thanks for the heads up A friend of mine is going through an identity theft situation. He got his debit card number stolen off the internet somehow. Had to cancel everything. Got some money back so far but not all.

the name is wrong, and credit card is wrong (and doesn't match the name supposedly), and the address is the only thing that matches to me.

Red Lion used to be downtown, I think its a Double Tree or Triple Bush now.

There are a couple of things you can do. One some insurance companies now offer Idendity theft as a free option with your home owners plan -which will pay for a portion of charges and then pay for an attorney and legal fees. I know the insurance company I work for pays up to $1500 cash and $23,500 court and legal fees to get your credit back.
Also if there is a fraudulent charge on your credit report you can file a claim which makes them prove that you made the charges.
Also many credit card companies will reverse any charges you didn't make.
