NCAA Trying to "improve" the College World Series

I can't find any stories about this because the Omaha World Herald web site is poopin' the bed at the moment, but I guess the NCAA is trying to convince Omaha to keep the number of beer gardens to a minimum at the College World Series, and who else but the OWH would have a story about the CWS? It's probably more accurate that I don't get any information from that site.

Anyway, supposedly Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey has succumbed to the NCAA's wishes in some way, and people are pissed about it. Some people think Omaha should throw its weight around a little more, and not kowtow to the NCAA. Others think that fewer beer gardens is a good idea. Some freaks think that there shouldn't be any beer gardens anywhere around 13th street.

In my opinion, the people that want to "stick it to the NCAA" only have one thing going for them, the fact that I don't know what other baseball park would want to host the College World Series.

The NCAA has been known to do some pretty stupid things, just to prove a point, and to keep the purity and sanctity of the NCAA experience alive.

I don't like baseball, but the CWS is ONLY fun to me if there's alcohol, and water, if the sun is burning your eyes out.

I already have to walk over to Zesto's to enjoy a refreshment. It's a perfect system. The "family friendly" folks don't have to have a beer spilled on them in the stadium, and the people that want to have fun can walk across the street and imbibe when the game gets boring (or the devil water is calling them).

If you have any solid information or links on the issue, please post them here.

Lame quote I found...pertaining to a councilman Garry Gernandt abstaining from voting for a liquor license...
"It's supposed to be the College World Series, not the College Beer Series"

Re: NCAA Trying to "improve" the College World Series

ok, the crappy world herald is back up, but I'm not providing any links to it.

I guess the city council is trying to restrict the number of liquor licenses at the CWS, which is fine by me, as long as I don't have to stay in line long for a beer.

Crybabies Garry Gernandt and Franklin Thompson are leading that effort, and it appears the NCAA is looking into the matter also, which probably means Omaha will do anything the NCAA says, but at the moment, the NCAA has not made any formal complaints about the beer gardens.

Without beer gardens, you have minors tailgating and drinking.

Just from what I heard on the radio yesterday. Dingerville is also gone now. ESPN and Coke are now taking over the space. All about the money.

Well I was at the doctor's office yesterday. I saw an article in the paper that said they approved for 2 beer gardens for the CWS, and there were people who were going to fight it to get more. Sorry I don't remember much else.

If Coke's taking over, I bet there won't be any free water fountains around. I hope somebody doesn't die of heat stroke out there.

More drunks for the old market area! And that means more money for street performers!
