What the heck is supposed to happen when the yellow flag comes out? What are the rules? Are there any? Is there a limit to how long the yellow flag comes out? What are the punishments for not abiding by this urine stained rag?

What other flags are there?
White - last lap?
Checkered - When I cross the finish line
green?
Red?
Black Flag - Get rid of the roaches in your car?

Contrary to popular opinion, this flag does not make it mandatory that slower cars must move over for the leader of the race. This flag gets a workout at tracks like Bristol and Martinsville, where traffic becomes a major factor.

YELLOW WITH RED VERTICAL STRIPES NASCAR Flag: Used only on road courses by corner workers, held or waved to signify debris or slippery conditions ahead

On a green, white , checkered finish, you'll see the green, and white wave at the same time.

Also to mark the halfway point of the race the flagman will take any two flags, cross them and hold them out to the field.

Now can someone explain to me why the yellow wasn't waved earlier during the last lap at Daytona--I think it could have been sooner (if it had been waved at all) during the accident, while Martin was leading (during the last 15 laps, I was pulling for the older guy) in turn 4, which I believe freezes the field (and he wins)...

I'm guessing NASCAR and/or the flagman wanted the race to finish under green, regardless of the major wreck occurring behind the leaders (a guy slid across the finish stripe on his freakin' roof, man), but I was curious as to what you all/what the press is saying.

they wanted,and the fans wanted a green flag finish. If they would have waved it, it wouldn't have happened.

So the flag man can determine at whatever point he pleases to wave the yellow? Or isn't he supposed to wave it immediately after the accident begins?

The only reason I ask is because during the post-race interview, Martin made the comment that he would have won if the flag had come out when the accident began...he didn't say it as an angry comment at Nascar, he just said it like "that's just how racing is" (sometimes the yellow works in your favor, other times it doesn't)

So I was curious

and he would have won. You only get 1 shot at a green,white,checkered. I believe then if the yellow comes out during that, race is basically over.

NASCAR radios down from the control room to the flagman to throw the yellow.

I rewound this on our DVR several times. Harvick was leading when the first car started to lose it but only for a brief moment, then Martin led for awhile with Harvick taking the lead back.

I actually think they did the right thing since it was so close to the finish line. Throwing the caution would not have made anybody any safer and would of only made the finishing order different.

Actually I have my room done in a race car theme (classroom, not bedroom) and in my class the Green Flag is for A+ homework, the Red Flag is by the clock so they stop looking at it, and the checkered flag is the background to a lot of my boards.
