TnT Show 01-27-2000

Thursday 1-27-00

The show started off this morning with a call from Donnie. He made it to Nashville yesterday and wanted to tell TnT about things that went on during his trip after yesterday’s show. TnT told Donnie to track down Johnny Cash while in Nashville and to check back later. There was more discussion about the Dr. John sex shop today as the guys took some calls and tried to figure out what trouble they could get in if they did help Dr. John’s shop sell some items on Valentine’s Day. With Tom Osborne being in the news, there was some discussion about his possible candidacy for a House Seat. I know none of you care what I think about it but I’m gonna tell you anyway. It’s stupid. He’s just a friggin retired football coach. Anyway, also early in the show Lisa read a story about some NY and LA firefighters being upset at “NYPD Blue” for their portrayal of a corrupt fireman in a recent episode. The guys wanted to get an Omaha firefighter’s take on it. It took Lisa all of a second to come up with the phone number of a firefighter right off the top of her head. TnT checked in with him and explained the situation. The firefighter didn’t seem to care anything about “NYPD Blue”. Also very early in the show, the guys called Todd’s mom. The reason behind the call was to let her know what they’d be doing on the show and get permission for it. Due to the fact that they’ve had some trouble with listening parents lately (who drop the “you can’t do that on the radio you slut” bomb), they thought they’d poke a little fun.

Well, Donnie checked in throughout the show today from Nashville. He drove around for a while looking for Johnny Cash until one of TnT’s listeners informed them that Johnny was in Jamaica or something. From there Donnie went to an IHOP and got a waitress to talk to TnT by telling her she was speaking with “Entertainment Tonight”. The guys spoke to her about famous people she’s seen in the IHOP and discussed her thoughts on the Super Bowl. When she asked when she could hear her interview on “ET”, the guys told her to talk to Donnie. Later Donnie went to the Country Music Hall of Fame and coaxed a janitor into talking to TnT by telling her he was speaking with “Nascar Today”. She was rather clueless and boring so the guys got rid of her. Further into the show Donnie showed up at the former Grand Ole Opera and talked the ticket taker into speaking with TnT by informing her she’d be talking to CNN. After the discussion she snuck Donnie on stage and let him belt out a few redneck tunes (that didn’t make the air). Donnie also spoke with a “gofer” there who went on the air thinking he was speaking with people from The Nashville Network. He was also boring and clueless. By the end of the show it was pretty obvious that Nashville had completely sucked the mojo out of Donnie. The guys told him to high tail it to Atlanta before Nashville killed him. Tune in tomorrow for Donnie’s final day of stellar Super Bowl coverage.

Harlan Williams from the Funny Bone came in this morning and hung out with TnT for a while. Harlan, Todd and Tyler spent a lot of time this morning talking about some of the movies Harlan has been in and the people he has worked with. Big names like Bruce Willis, Matthew Perry, Jim Carrey and Mini-Me all came up during conversation and Harlan was happy to elaborate stories about each of them. He talked with the guys about “Dumb and Dumber”, “Half Baked”, “There’s Something About Mary” and “Rocket Man” (in which he starred) as well as some of the other films he’s been in. Harlan also wasn’t shy about joining in on the topics of the day or tossing out an insanely off the wall analogy (“like monkeys in an orange tree”) that made all in the room laugh their asses off. He really seemed to enjoy his stay with TnT and was a great guest to listen to over the air. Make sure to check out his act at the Funny Bone before he leaves town. Call 493-8036 for reservations and information on his stay. Harlan’s visit will also end up on the Best Of shows at some point in the future so if you missed it this morning you can catch it on Saturday’s to come.

TnT decided to play more Super Bowl around the world today. Sense Todd has it drilled in his head that all folks from Manitoba are “friendly”, they called a Manitoban phone operator to get her take on the Super Bowl. Well, she turned out to be a complete bitch and hung up on them. Luckily, through some twist of fate, comedian/actor Harlan Williams informed TnT that they could call his cousin Kevin in Canada. His cousin just happened to be the keyboard player for the band Barenaked Ladies. The guys talked to him about his career with the band and listened to Harlan give his cousin a hard time. It was quite interesting. Towards the end of the call/interview, Harlan had is cousin sit down to his piano and play the theme song from “The Incredible Hulk” while Harlan did the grunting sound effects. The call concluded with Kevin playing a bit of “Oh Canada”.

Todd and Tyler had a conversation with Steven Van Sant this morning. He used to play in Bruce Springstein’s Band, made a solo album or two and has most recently taken a roll in HBO’s “The Sopranos”. The guys spent some time talking about his career with Bruce years ago and then discussed the reunion tour that’s taking place now. TnT asked about his latest album, which is getting some airplay now. Of most importance to TnT was his roll in “The Sopranos” which they spent a majority of the interview talking about. Steven shared some stories about the show and also helped Barb the Prize Lady get some show details straight. If you missed this interview, it will most likely appear on next weekend’s Best Of show.

D’Vine came in toward the end of the show and played a few songs for TnT. They had actually learned “Baby Don’t Get Hooked On Me” with the idea that TnT would be singing the vocals. Well, when it came time to perform, the band started off the song, which TnT butchered for about 10 seconds. After that, all hope was lost and they stopped playing. They all joked about how horrible TnT sounded singing it and then the band played a few real tunes.

Well, that’s the update for today. Check back here tomorrow for the final update of the week. Thanks for watching. Goodnight. –the Alien Guy-
