TnT Show 09-11-2003

Thursday 9-11-03

Todd and Tyler started off their show this morning by acknowledging the 2-year anniversary of the September 11th attacks. Not wanting to put a damper on the entire show, after their mention they decided not to dwell on the subject all morning long. Instead, they moved on to a discussion about old counsel radios and their calendar girl photo submissions received so far. They also spent a few moments talking about Trav’s FWIW last night, which centered on Hal Daub’s “help” with the city budget problems. TnT both seemed to feel that Travis has been doing more on his FWIW recently to get reaction and less of doing commentaries on what he really is thinking about issues. TnT then moved on to discuss the song downloading piracy laws and took some phone calls from listeners.

BW came in with the news a bit later. Before he began, he shared yet another tale from the mower, this one about the trouble he ran into yesterday while attempting to mow by streetlight after 8pm. The news itself consisted of discussions about the 9-11 memorial ceremonies, the city budget, Hal Daub’s future political career in Omaha, black hole sound effects, full moon accidents, a kid killed when his buddy thumped him over the melon with a skateboard, and the gang debated the existence of white power football fans. That last subject was sparked by a report of a Fremont man arrested for some sort of anti-immigrant protest on a street in Fremont. Reports came in that the man arrested was the infamous caller Ivan, the Kingdom Come fan that phoned TnT a while back and went off on several anti-immigrant rants.

TnT went to their archives and played Ivan’s original call to Jessica Dol and then opened up their phone lines to listeners. Most of those who checked in agreed with TnT’s “live and let live” philosophy yet a couple of racists were able to get through with their anti-Mexican rhetoric. TnT attempted to reason with some of those hate callers, asking, “Why do you care if they move here for a better life?” but it was clear that there was no reasoning with such callers. A bit later when Travis arrived, he mentioned that Ivan has been calling him as well. Trav and Jeremy set off to download a voice mail left for Travis by Ivan and shortly after TnT played the clip. It was definitely Ivan and he has not changed his views, spouting the same dribble as when he originally called Jessica to bitch about her lack of Kingdom Come in the song selection months ago. More calls came in but the gang quickly tired of the racist discussion.

Travis also delivered his sports report for the morning but before he did, he got into a lengthy argument with TnT about Hal Daub, his FWIW subject last night. TnT pointed out that they thought Trav was just making up commentaries in order to spark more phone calls but Trav disputed that. He elaborated further by giving some specifics from his FWIW last night and saying that he really does believe Daub didn’t do anything wrong and was simply trying to help the city budget problem. TnT, on the other hand, then pointed out that Daub has no say in anything anymore because he’s no longer in a position of power. The guys asked as a parallel, “Does Al Gore butt in to fix the recession for GW? No.”

Travis eventually got around to delivering this morning’s sports report. Following that, a conversation about the $3 “corking fee” Trav was recently charged by a local wine merchant came up as a topic again. TnT had never heard of a corking fee, assuming it was something that was just folded into the price of a bottle of wine at a restaurant. The owner of the store that sold Trav the wine phoned in and explained that had he taken the bottle and left, there would have been no fee but because he had it opened in their café area, they charge the “corking fee”. Several callers checked in on the topic before the guys moved on.

Mario Digeorgio from the Funny Bone stopped in this morning and spent a couple of hours with TnT. Originally from Austin, recently moving back, Mario spent some time in New York City and was there the day the Trade Center were attacked. He said he was normally scheduled to stop at the Trade Center on the morning of the attack but opted to skip work and sleep in. He used to work for the Topps trading card company as a proofreader for baseball cards and such so he had some things to share with TnT related to that job. Mario also joined in on the other topics of the morning and seemed to have a good time hanging out with TnT. Check him out at the Funny Bone all week by phoning 493-8036.

BW came in with the e-news a bit later in the show. There was some talk about J Lo’s wedding being cancelled (maybe), lost Hank Williams tunes being recovered, Dick Clark’s paint ball TV show ideas, a little “On this day in history”, a quiz about being American, and then BW wrapped up the e-news with a heartwarming tale about a man that was butt raped by an armed man while he was on a “lets rest in the park for a while” date with his girlfriend of just 1 week.

Before the end of the show, Todd and Tyler spoke to Frank Caliendo of Fox’s “Mad TV”. He’s the big guy who does the John Madden impersonation, which TnT absolutely love. He talked with the guys about his time on Mad TV, the changes in the show over the years, some behind-the-scenes stuff that sets it apart from the atmosphere of SNL, and more. He also did several impersonations during his call, confusing the holy s-bomb out of me, including Madden, Al Pacino, Di Nero, and Robin Williams. Frank also talked with TnT about his new gig on the Fox NFL pre-game show on Sunday mornings where he’ll be doing some sketch comedy-ish stuff related to football. Frank was quite funny this morning so make sure you catch him on Fox’s NFL pre-game show and on this season of Mad TV. By the way, for more information on Frank, visit his web site at Mad TV Guy (.com).

That does it for the big Thursday update. Tune in tonight at 10pm for the 3rd Shift Replay of this morning’s show and make sure to rejoin the guys tomorrow at 5:30am for the Friday program. Thanks for watching. Good night. -Corby-
