TnT Show 09-18-2003

Thursday 9-18-03

Todd and Tyler began their show this morning by playing a tune performed by Zevon and Springsteen from Zevon’s last album. They talked about the song for a bit before moving on into a discussion about the impending closing of the Music Box. They wondered why there has been such media attention related to the club’s closing and pointed out, once again, that had the club advertised on radio stations that people actually listen to, Z-92 mainly, they’d probably be in much better financial shape.

Related to local media focusing attention on things that TnT find odd, the guys wondered today exactly why local media pays so much attention to the activities of Warren Buffet. “What has Buffet ever done to help out local media in this town?” they asked. Just because someone is loaded doesn’t mean they deserve a whack-fest on local TV and in the paper 24-7. A caller suggested that the only reason Warren gets so much attention here in town is because there’s just nothing else for the media to focus on. That caller, originally from New York, pointed out that where he’s from there are millionaires all over the place and the New York media couldn’t care less about them. That, as was discussed for a bit, is most likely due to the fact that there is so much more to do and see in the big city.

Also early in today’s show, the guys spent some time talking about Trav’s FWIW last night, which focused on his idea to eliminate political parties altogether. TnT pointed out that since Trav began the FWIW and has been forced into researching the issues and learning more about the world he has seemed to drift away from his Republican viewpoints and is now more of a Moderate.

Following the discussion about Travis, Todd and Tyler played a little game called, “Who wants to kick our asses?” The concept for the game was spawned by someone that wanted to kick TnT’s asses because of something they said on their show yesterday. As part of the game, TnT opened up the phone lines and let their listeners phone in and try to guess exactly whom it was that they had pissed off during yesterday’s program. Hilariously, the guys went through several banks of phone calls as listeners suggested TnT may have pissed off people like Tommy Frazier, “tards”, BW’s mom, and so on. Some of the suggestions about people they could have pissed off yesterday even they had forgotten about. As it turns out, the one-armed Subway manager that was robbed and chanced down the bad guy is the person that wanted to kick TnT’s asses. The guys took a few moments to point out today that they really didn’t say anything bad about that guy; they just made a joke or two about how a one-armed man makes a sub sandwich. Evidentially, the guy heard third-hand and blew things out of proportion. Perhaps we’ll get another round of “Who wants to kick our asses?” again in the near future.

BW came in with the news a bit later in the show. He began with an update on the condition of Officer Pratt, which hasn’t changed at all since yesterday. They moved on to talk about a failed robbery of a Q Street Snack Shack by method of the old “Run away!” trick, there was some discussion about whether or not people who commit suicide are eligible to receive death benefits from insurance, and some talk about vulnerable adults getting ripped off. The gang continued with a discussion about what image to put on the Nebraska state quarter. From the sounds of it, Missouri has ripped off the Lewis & Clark idea and Iowa is stealing Arbor Day so TnT tried to come up with some new ideas. The best of the day, in my opinion, was suggested by a listener that wants to put the Kool-Aid man on the quarter, as the powdery drink was invented in Nebraska.

The news moved on with talk about Bush admitting that there is no connection between Saddam and the 9-11 attacks two years ago, a story about a baby being found in a shoe box, reports of monkeys having the ability to understand the concept of fairness, and talk of a 105 pound 5’1” Russian ballet dancer that’s too tall and fat to dance. BW then wrapped up the newscast by reading over a list of the 20 most requested video clips of all time. As he read through the list, it became apparent to TnT that someone in London must have formed the list, as there were silly things on it such as Margaret Thatcher’s resignation and some British soccer team winning a cup. They were right on the money and ended their discussion of the list after BW reported that the #1 most requested video clip was of the first moon walk.

In order to help out Officer Pratt and his family, Todd and Tyler announced details of a benefit they are taking part in next Saturday at the Anchor Inn. There is going to be a fundraiser/party at the Anchor starting at 5pm with Down To Here performing at 7pm on the outside stage. Entry is only $2, there will be a chili feed, and all donations are welcome. Roz is also doing a poker run to help out, which will conclude at the Anchor on Saturday evening. TnT will continue to promote this event all next week so if you missed any of the details or your short-term memory has already erased the paragraph you’re reading right now, stay tuned to TnT for more information.

Travis came in with the sports a bit later in the show. Before he began, the gang read over an article in the paper referencing something called a “libero” in the world of volleyball. Nobody had ever heard of the term and TnT began to speculate about what it meant. BW offered his own theory, stating that it’s like a mulatto but with Spaniard mixed in. Turns out he was way off. Callers phoned the show and informed TnT and Travis that a libero is some sort of excellent defensive player in volleyball that can come in and out of the game at will. Following further speculation and a brainstormed idea from TnT to put all of the lesbians on any given team in different uniforms, Travis moved on with today’s sports and a bit more FWIW discussion.

Larry the Cable Guy checked in this morning and delivered a commentary on how he is sick of Native Americans getting pissed off at sports teams for using “Indian” related mascots and names. The commentary, straight out of 1997, was pretty amusing but I’m convinced it came from the Cable Guy archives. We may hear from Larry again this week but if not, he’ll check in again in a few days time.

Sean Gnandt and Jason Dickson from the Funny Bone joined the guys in studio for a while today. Sean spent some time talking with the guys about speed dating on Monday night with Lisa. She phoned the show today and after some heavy prompting from both Todd and Tyler, Sean asked Lisa out to dinner. She said yes, awkwardly though. Moments later Jessica Dol came in studio and started giving Sean a hard time for asking out another woman. It has come to light in recent weeks that Jessica wants Sean’s coco puffs, the two even kissed on TnT’s show a while back, but for whatever reason Sean’s never been able to close the deal and go “knuckles deep”, as Sean put it, in J. Dol. There was more awkwardness in the room, leaving everyone feeling quite uncomfortable. Even Lisa the speed dater who had just made the date with Sean phoned Jeremy back and wanted to call it off in order to avoid pissing off Jessica. Shortly thereafter Jeremy and Jessica spilled the beans and informed everyone that she was only kidding. Jessica actually doesn’t give a crap who Sean dates but it was quite fun to be able to hear him handle the awkward situation. Sean’s date with Lisa to Mr. C’s is still on as of this moment. By the way, you can catch Sean and Jason at the Funny Bone this weekend with Kevin Pollak by phoning 493-8036.

Todd and Tyler spoke to former pro wrestler and current author Mick Foley this morning. He’s spent the week co-hosting the Jimmy Kimmel show so he shared his experience doing that so far with TnT. He also talked a bit about an appearance on Larry King with some other wrestlers and gave his opinion on how Rowdy Roddy Piper blames pro wrestling for ruining his life. He also talked a bit about some of the physical repercussions his body suffers from his years of off-the-top-ropes falls. Mick then talked a bit about writing his surprisingly successful autobiography and how it’s success led him to write several other books. His current book, “Teitam Brown” is on the shelves now and as Mick described it, it’s disturbing and dark. If you missed today’s interview, tune in to the Best Of or tonight’s 3rd Shift Replay.

BW came in towards the end of the show and delivered today’s e-news segment. There was some talk about the new release of “Let It Be”, which has been stripped to it’s bare sound, some talk about the album Lennon signed for the asshole that murdered him being sold at auction, discussion of the sales of Simon and Garfunkel tickets, amputee vampires in comas, and Brian introduced a new e-news feature, “On this day in Todd and Tyler show history.”

For the new feature, BW went to the daily update archives of the TnT show, which span back as far as June of 1998, and reported on a few things that have happened on TnT’s show over the years on this date. It was really cool to hear parts of my very old updates being read and even Todd and Tyler seemed to enjoy the memories those old updates brought back. I, as the author, was slightly embarrassed, though. When I first began these updates my writing style was a bit 3rd grader-ish. I’ve since graduated to a more well rounded 4th grader-ish style so hearing some of those older, poorly written tidbits was embarrassing. Hopefully BW will continue this bit for a while because it’s kind of cool to remember the old days. However, it’s entirely possible that “On this day in Todd and Tyler show history” will fall to the same demise as his dead baby stories, “2 out of 3 ain’t bad” stories, and more recently, the “Who the hell is that” segments.

That does it for the Thursday update. Tune in tonight at 10pm for the 3rd Shift Replay of today’s show and make sure to join TnT again tomorrow for the Friday program at 5:30am. Keep in mind that comedian/actor Kevin Pollak will join the guys in studio so it should be a lot of fun. Thanks for watching. Good night. -Corby-
