| CBS fires Imus NEW YORK (Reuters) - Radio host Don Imus was dumped by CBS Radio on Thursday in an inglorious end to a 30-year career that erupted in controversy over racist and sexist comments about a women's college basketball team. CBS' decision to pull the plug on the popular "Imus in the Morning" show, which blended locker-room humor with interviews with A-list politicians and celebrities, followed days of uproar after he called the mostly black Rutgers University team "nappy-headed hos." The move came one day after he was unceremoniously jettisoned by MSNBC, which had broadcast his radio show on television and after several major advertisers, including General Motors and Procter & Gamble backed out. Debates over racial expressions are a frequent feature of an American culture still struggling to come to terms with a legacy of slavery and discrimination. "Nappy" is a slur describing the tightly curled hair of many African-Americans. "Ho" is slang for "whore," usage of which has exploded in hip-hop music and popular culture. "Nappy" is deemed so offensive it has largely fallen out of modern American usage. "From the outset, I believe all of us have been deeply upset and revulsed by the statements that were made on our air about the young women who represented Rutgers University ... with such class, energy and talent," CBS President and Chief Executive Officer Leslie Moonves said in a statement. CBS said the cancellation was effective immediately. The show was carried on 61 stations across the United States. CBS Corp. unit CBS Radio had originally said it would suspend him for two weeks starting Monday. --- Full Article: CBS fires Imus | U.S. | Reuters News Source: Breaking News, World, U.S., Video, Investing and Business News & More | Reuters.com

| Re: CBS fires Imus The guys have been talking a lot about this issue.. He screwed up and then apologized for it.. It was wrong but I don't think it was worth him getting fired for it.. Why not turn it into something positive use it to build relations. Have him talk about racism and how important it is to think about things like that. Last edited by MMM; 04-12-2007 at 06:54 PM. |

| Re: CBS fires Imus ^Exactly, have him donate a ton of money to Rutgers (which I'm guessing he'll do anyway) and bring in a bunch of minority leaders and discuss racism in today's society, bringing to light the continued struggle for equality...

| Re: CBS fires Imus What pisses me off about this is to me, it's not a fricken race issue... Jackson and Sharpton made it into a race issue... When I was in Army Basic training, all my Drill Sgt.s were black, and they called is all "Nappy headed"... It was a term to describe "DIRTY"... #2... Some of those girls did have curly hair at the game, but at the press conference, they were all sporting flat and straight hair do's..... Imus made his living off being a shock Jock... Stern followed in his path... And TnT were riding on their coat tails in the same "small city" market... That's why TnT are scared... This shit is getting out of hand.... Too many fricken double standards... And MONEY is the root cause.... Too much of the "political correctness" Is going to bring down this country... I need a fricken list of what I can say and what I can't...... But wait, what happened to the 1rst Amendment? Rant over... Peace out! And Word to yer mother! ![]()

the only argument needed personally, i don't think it's right for Imus and his backers to be pointing the finger back in the direction of the black community saying "well if they can do it, then we can do it too" this is about as valid as the yapping i've been hearing saying the lacrosse guys should have been tried because "if it had been 3 black guys and a white woman the guys would be in prison by now" black and white are not the same... just the same as 4 and 7 are differnt numbers, things are not equal

| Re: CBS fires Imus Quote:
I never heard Imus suggesting that it was ok. He said he f@cked up. You are talking about two different things. One is something that happened and was racist and it did hurt feelings and was politically "incorrect". It however will not follow those people for all of their lives. Although not the same everyone has been called names before - it was wrong but in my opinion not worth firing him over. He screwed up - sometimes that happens. As far as your second comment the Duke boys were charged before the evidence was even processed, so don't tell me that the police would have handled it different if the races were different. You don't know that. See now people on the news that are being interviewed are saying you just can't say whatever you want.. HELLO .. that is the first amendment. it gives you the right to say whatever you want. It may be wrong or stupid or incorrect but it is your right to say it. Lets just wait and see how long before broadcasters are not allowed to speak out about how stupid our president is without being fired. I think that sometimes people overlook the implications of something like this. Actually I could take your comment about rich white guys as a racist comment. You are saying because a person is a certain race and gender in a economic group that they are racist (but not all of them), but you are prejudging them based on those factors. Todd and Tyler fit those categories and they are not racist. Donnie - I agree with you.. They could have used this to help instead of causing more pain and tension. | |

| Re: CBS fires Imus Lets not forget what Al Sharpton has done.. 1991: A Hasidic Jewish driver in Brooklyn's Crown Heights section accidentally kills Gavin Cato, a 7-year-old black child, and antisemitic riots erupt. Sharpton races to pour gasoline on the fire. At Gavin's funeral he rails against the "diamond merchants" -- code for Jews -- with "the blood of innocent babies" on their hands. He mobilizes hundreds of demonstrators to march through the Jewish neighborhood, chanting, "No justice, no peace." A rabbinical student, Yankel Rosenbaum, is surrounded by a mob shouting "Kill the Jews!" and stabbed to death That is just one of the events in the past that Al Sharpton has been a leader to and involved in where there was racism but it wasn't towards someone because of the color of their skin but because of their religious views.. He divides and separates people by holding up the negative and then blowing it out of proportion. He creates a deep belief in racism and upholds it, which institutionalizes it deeper into the cultural. |

| Re: CBS fires Imus I had heard that Don Imus had made derogatory statements about African Americans in the past, but the reporter did not ellaborate about what those statements were. The comments Imus made, which led to his being fired, were in poor judgement, and he was wrong to have said them. One of the sad things with this story, other than many people being hurt by his comments, is that he probably still feels as though he did nothing wrong. |

But ferchrissakes, he and Stern both were part of Infinity Broadcasting, they could have both been fired 10 years ago for "more offensive" things. This is more of the Janet Jackson bullshit for CBS, that's what it is. Are we only going to be able to joke about straight white males in the future, because those seem to be the only jokes allowed right now. Quote:

| Re: CBS fires Imus Because he made remarks about African Americans in the past as well as those that led to his being fired. If a person believes that what they say is wrong I don't believe they would make comments of the same nature again. But that is just my opinion based on what I've read and heard about this story. | Re: CBS fires Imus Quote:
It's in dangerous territory, to be sure. Imus was fired for making a shocking comment that caused advertisers to balk; don't pretend like CBS released him for any noble reason except as a scapegoat to keep revenue dollars. I don't believe it was Imus' history either because "history" is a subjective term that only helped serve as a cover to his firing. Although the specific words were debatable, he wasn't fired for saying them. He was fired because an apparent majority caused a big stink and wanted consequences for his commentary. TnT have every right to be afraid of the masses because who knows what will stop them from carrying that torch to all radio stations or other media, tyrannically suffocating the small minority of broadcasts that use similar commentary either as humor (like the Empire) or as ammo (bigotry in media). As said before, I may not like what you say but I'll damn well support your right to say it, no matter how offensive it is. We could debate the few exceptions, such as fighting words, but I digress. Like Thender said earlier, this need for political correctness very well might choke or forever change our media...perhaps even for the worst. It is a first amendment issue insomuch that it might become one, if that makes sense...
